New stamps on architecture…

canada

Date of Issue : 9 June 2011

Art Deco Stamps

This new set of stamps issued by  Canada Post on 9 June 2011, features five Canadian structures built during the Art Deco period.

Emerging in France between the two world wars, Art Deco was a creative response to the dull austerity of the First World War that permeated the design of furniture, household goods and textiles. Still, the movement made its most lasting contribution to early 20th century architecture. Beginning between 1908 and 1912, Art Deco gained mainstream exposure at the exposition from which it took its name: the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Moderne in Paris, France in 1925, and the period continued well into the Great Depression. In fact, several prominent Canadian Art Deco buildings were constructed as a result of federal employment initiatives

According to designer Ivan Novotny of Taylor | Sprules, "Many of the great (Art) Deco buildings across this country have very distinct silhouettes that were defined by the principles of the movement. It's the commonly overlooked extraordinary details that adorn these great spires that demand a closer look."

In addition to dramatic black and white photography, Novotny adds that the stamp design "uses bold geometric forms and vibrant colours, to capture each building's unique character."

According to Alain Leduc, Stamp Design Manager, "With stamps, it's the details that count, that elevate the design to something more than merely representative. For that reason, the emphasis on detail on the Art Deco period was so very inspiring. It's the details that allow an architect to take a functional structure and make art of it."

The stamps show  Burrard Bridge, R. C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, Cormier House, Supreme Court of Canada and Dominion Building.

Metz - FFPA Congress stamp from France

image

The French Post has issued a stamp dedicated to the city of Metz which welcomes in 2011 the 84th Congress of the FFPA (French Federation of Philatelic Associations).

An important Gallo-Roman city, Merovingian capital of the Austrasia kingdom, birthplace of the Carolingian dynasty, cradle of the Gregorian chant, and one of the oldest republics of the common era in Europe, Metz has a rich 3,000 year history. The city has been steeped in Romance culture, but has been strongly influenced by Germanic culture due to its location and history.

The stamp illustrates one of the largest Gothic buildings in Europe, St. Stephen's Cathedral, built from 1220 to 1522. On the vignette, the Gate of Germans (12th-15th century), remnants of the old medieval fortification could be seen.

New Zodiac sign stamp from Canada …

Screenshot_1

Date of Issue : 22 June 2011

In the months of April, May and June, Canada Post has launched three more Signs of the Zodiac stamp issues, each one on the day in which each particular constellation takes its place of prominence in the zodiac calendar. The recent one is to be issued on June 22 featuring Cancer, the crab. Gemini, Aeries and Taurus signs have already appeared on the stamps. A souvenir sheet is issued featuring four Zodiac signs.

A Stamp booklet of 10 stamps is also issued on Cancer sign.

Signs of the Zodiac: Cancer, the crab

Cancer is the fourth astrological sign in the zodiac. A water sign ruled by the changeable moon, the qualities of the Cancer personality are the least decisive of all of the signs of the signs of the zodiac. The strongest instincts in those born under this very emotional and highly dramatic sign are an intense home-loving nature and the need to seek a refuge from the stresses in life.

While not anti-social, Cancer is one of the most happily solitary signs. Cancers can appear tough and uncompromising. They need to balance their desire to be outgoing with their natural reserve. They have an air of purposefulness, a philosophical nature and frequently inspire others. Cancer individuals often possess considerable literary, artistic or oratorical talent—and many are drawn to the stage. They are also overly emotional; they cling to idealistic fantasies and while they give the impression that they are down to earth, they are often fascinated by the occult and tend to be more open to psychic influence than most. Cancers have a retentive memory of emotional events and tend to avoid the present, preferring to live in the past via memory and in the future through imagination.

Dog Sled Mail stamp by Canada Post..

canada

Date of Issue : 13 May 2011

image

On May 13th, Canada Post issued a domestic rate stamp to commemorate the history of mail delivery by dog sleds. The stamp design features a dog sled and its musher crossing a snowy wilderness, as well as images of some early pieces of mail sent by dog sled. The stamp represents the importance Canada Post has always attached to serving Canadians in remote rural communities.

Dog Sled Mail Run background

The Gold Rush Trail Dog Sled Mail Run is living history. For the past 19 years, on the fourth weekend of January, dog teams and dedicated mushers who have been sworn in as official mail carriers have carried Canada Post mail in their dog sleds over the Gold Rush Trail. Special Mail Run envelopes are stamped "Carried by Dog Team" and are hand cancelled in Quesnel, Wells and Barkerville, the three post offices along the route. Once delivered to Barkerville, this mail enters the regular mail system for delivery anywhere in the world.

Throughout the northern half of Canada, sled dog teams transported the winter mail from the early 1800's to the 1920's, when airplanes piloted by returning daredevil WWI aces introduced what came to be known as air mail. This gradually displaced the sled dogs as these pilots opened up Canada's frontier, however in a few isolated locations winter mail was still delivered by dog team until the 1960's.

Zodiac signs on Stamps..

Date of Issue : 20 May 20211

In the months of April, May and June, Canada Post is launching three more Signs of the Zodiac stamp issues, each one on the day in which each particular constellation takes its place of prominence in the zodiac calendar. On 20th May a Stamp on Gemini sign will be released.

Signs of the Zodiac: Gemini, the twins
Named for the stars Castor and Polydeuces (also known as Pollux--and the two stars together are known as the Dioscuri), Gemini means twins in Latin. The third astrological sign in the Zodiac, Gemini is considered an air sign, and is closely associated with the planet Mercury. The sun is in Gemini from approximately May 21 to June 20. However, some astrologists claim that the end of the constellation's rule is at the very moment the Solstice begins on June 21.

New aromatic stamp from Australia..

australia

Date of Issue : 17 May 2011

Bush fresh ... the eucalyptus-infused stamp

Australia Post will issue a new aromatic postage stamp on 17th May  2011 with specific aromatic smell of Eucalyptus oil. The stamp has been printed by using special technique. "The eucalyptus scent is encapsulated into little bubbles and we put that into a printable varnish," Graeme Lidgerwood, the sales manager of the print firm Ego, said. "It could last forever. The scent will only wear off when you rub the surface to break the micro bubbles." The Farming Australia issue, on sale from May 17, features four 60c stamps depicting native horticultural products: bush honey, macadamia nuts, tea-tree oil and eucalyptus oil. However only one will feature the scent of a eucalypt forest embedded in what Ego calls the Scent print varnish, a technique which has been used to liven up magazine covers. The scented stamp will be  available only in a special sheet that retails for slightly above face value, at $6.45 for 10 stamps. Individual stamps (bought over the counter, or on self-adhesive rolls and booklets) , will not carry the eucalypt scent.

Largest Stamp by Canada Post

Date of Issue – 4 October 2010

Hi ! here is the largest stamp issued by Canada Post which is quite big in size featuring a Blue Whale. With $10 value it becomes the highest value definitive stamp of Canada. Here are the full details about the stamp. Canada Mint also issued a beautiful $10 Sterling Silver coin on blue whale. Just wonderful in nice packing with a pair of stamps. This is all for Today…Till next Post…Have a Nice Time !!

Coin

The $10 sterling silver coin is presented along with two of Canada Post’s largest stamps ever in a beautiful maple wood box. Also includes a fact-filled, full-colour booklet on the blue whale.

Canada Post issued a $ 10 definitive stamp on 4 October 2010. it carries the highest face value of any Canadian postage stamp. It is about 5 x 2" inches in size and is the largest stamp ever issued by Canada Post. The stamp features a blue whale. Reaching more than 30 metres in length and weighing up to 180 metric tonnes, it is the largest animal known to have existed, outclassing even the dinosaurs.

Due to high face value of the stamp , several security features are used in the new $10 stamp. The whale's scientific name (Balaenoptera musculus) is written in intaglio micro printing. As well, a large cluster of krill (the whale's food of choice) and a diver are printed in tagging that can only be seen using ultraviolet light.

The stamp is the latest in a series of high-value definitive stamps that began in 1997 with the release of the $8 issue showing a grizzly bear. For 13 years, that stamp had held the record as the canada's highest value postage. The $10 blue whale, double the length of the grizzly bear stamp, has taken the title from it, both in value and size.

$10 Sterling Silver Coin with Blue Whale

canada

The blue whale is the last coin and stamp set in the Canadian Wildlife Series co-produced by the Royal Canadian Mint and Canada Post.

Coin design:
A blue whale dives below ocean waves and a silhouette of a scuba diver.

New Stamp on Mental Health

To be issued on 7 September 2010

The new stamp to be issued by Canada Post stamp features a mental health patient on the path towards recovery. According to Louis Gagnon of the Montréal-based design firm Paprika, “The lines that flow through the stamp cross over one another to represent the plight of a troubled mind moving toward a sense of peace as they rise up the mountain.” A tree, a universal symbol of growth, healing and renewal, sprouts at the mountain’s summit.

In 2008, Canada Post set out to eliminate the misconceptions associated with mental illness, establishing the Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health. From the generous support of employees, customers and suppliers, Canada Post has raised more than $2.5 million for the Foundation and hopes to raise another $2 million by the end of this year.
