My Rainbow of Philatelic Articles by Dr Satyendra Kumar Agarwal is a collection of specialized and comprehensive articles on a variety of subjects published in Rainbow Stamp News during last three years . These articles have enthralled the readers all over the world which is proved by a number of e mails received by me regularly from the readers in appreciation of Dr Agarwal’s articles . Dr. Agarwal needs no more introduction to my readers, a man of Roses who won several awards at National and International exhibitions for his specialized exhibit on Roses ( recently won Large Vermeil in INDIPEX 2011) . This book of his specialized articles brought out by Dr Agarwal is another beautiful rose in his collection which also won a Silver Bronze Medal in INDIPEX 2011 in the Literature Class.

Its a great pleasure for me to present here the Book Review of this wonderful book by Dr Agarwal for the lovers of Thematic Philately. It has also been reviewed by Topical Time of ATA .

Book Review

The book ‘My Rainbow of Philatelic Articles’ by Dr Satyendra Kumar Agarwal contains about 20 articles on different themes including technical articles on thematic Philately with more than 400 color illustrations in 150 pages.The book is a complete guide for thematic collectors. The specific feature of this book is its high quality of printing which gives crystal clear image of the illustrations. It would not only help collectors to select an interesting theme for their exhibit but would also guide them about availability of specific philatelic material available on that particular subject. It is a complete reference book for the lovers of Thematic Philately. Centenary of Girl Guiding…

Gibraltar Post has issued  a set of 4 stamps  to commemorate Centenary of Girl guiding . The stamps depict the uniforms, badges and other identifiable features of the Girl guiding age-groups - Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section.

 

    

 Girl guides or Girl Scouts is a parallel movement to Scouting. It evolved from the Scouting movement in the early years of the 20th century. Girls were attracted to Scouting since its inception in 1907 when Robert Baden-Powell, a famous army general, tried out his ideas for training boys at a camp on Brownsea Island in 1907 and the following year published them in a book, ‘Scouting for Boys’.

 

Baden Powell wanted to create a separate identity for the girls so that they could work for self-development independently, not in imitation of their brothers. He decided that the name should change and the name ‘Guide’ was taken from a famous frontier regiment in the British Indian Army, the Corps of Guides, which was noted for its skills in tracking and survival. Baden-Powell’s sister, Agnes, was charged with the task and the Girl Guides were founded in the UK in 1910.

Two central themes have been present from the earliest days of the movement: domestic skills and “a kind of practical feminism which embodies physical fitness, survival skills, camping, citizenship training, and career preparation”. These two themes have been emphasised differently at different times and by different groups, but have remained central to Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.Guiding has come a long way since then – the movement has travelled all over the globe with over 10 million members worldwide. Internationally it is governed by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts with member organizations in 144 countries.

New stamps on Youth Olympic Games..

 

Date of Issue – 14 August 2010

Hi !  In the tradition of the Olympic Games, a new sporting event is being held in Singapore - the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics (YOG) from August 14 – 26.These Games have given a chance to see 3,531 athletes between 14 and 18 years of age from 204 National Olympic Committees competing in 184 events in 26 sports. To commemorate this event special stamps have been issued by various postal administrations. All the stamps are very nice. But a miniature sheet from Romania is very special for me as it also features a Rainbow on it ….In Club News I am pleased to publish news about a workshop on Philately held in Kanpur GPO. Well, the place which I visited many times and started getting my first stamps since my school days..Thanks to distinguished philatelist of Kanpur  Mr Rajpreet Singh Saluja who shares  news about the workshop here…Heartiest Congratulations to noted philatelist and President of Ludhiana Philatelic Club Mr Yashpal Bangia who was recently  conferred Punjab State Independence Day Award by CM of Punjab … This is all for Today….Till Next Post …..Have a Nice Time !

 

 

On 14 August 2010, the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee in collaboration with the Singapore Post launched four Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010) stamps.

 

 

A set of four stamps   feature the Singapore 2010 Mascots, Lyo and Merly, in poses showcasing the Culture and Education Programme (CEP) and Singapore 2010 Sports.

The first two designs highlight the World Culture Village and Island Adventure formats of CEP. Athletes will learn about diverse cultures, teamwork and leadership through these two activities. The next two designs feature the Mascots in their favourite sports of Aquatics – Swimming and Basketball respectively.

State Award for Ludhiana Philatelist

Mr Yash Pal Bangia, President, Ludhiana Philatelic Club, was conferred Punjab State Independence Day Award by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at the Independence Day function in Ferozepur on Sunday, 15^th August. Yashpal Bangia, a retired public relations officer of the postal department has dedicated over 35 years to philately and has emerged as a prolific writer. He took the initiative to begin the Ludhiana Philatelic Club in the city in 1973 with members from all walks of life. He has written six books on philately.Recently he has also published two books for senior citizens, “Dhalti Umar Badhte Kadam” Part-I and Part-II. He was instrumental in establishing The Stamp Gallery at the science city in Kapurthala. He is still pursuing the hobby of stamp collection with zeal and at the same time more devoted to the promotion of the philately among children.

 

Workshop on Philately at GPO Kanpur

A two Day Workshop on Philately was conducted at GPO Kanpur on the 4th and 5th of August 2010 . Students from several schools participated in the workshop . A Quiz Competition was also organized .Winners were given certificates . Lot of information regarding Philately was given to the students  .

Stamp on Rainbow Parade..

Here is an unusual stamp featured above issued by Austrian Post on 3rd July 2010, commemorating the 15th Rainbow Parade in Vienna. This is the first time in the world that a postal authority has issued a special stamp on a gay/lesbian occasion. “Austrian Post has written a philatelic history by issuing a stamp for this event,With a face value of 55 euro cents, the postage for a standard letter or postcard within Austria, 250,000 stamps have been printed.

Rainbow Parade

Gay couples holding hands as they walk through the city fighting for gay rights.Vienna's Rainbow Parade circles the grand boulevards in a demonstration of gay pride, attracting around 100,000 revelers. Numerous floats blast out classical music and the obligatory banging techno. Vienna's trams carry rainbow flags in the run-up to the parade.

The parade route takes in the grand architecture of the Stock Exchange, Vienna University, City Hall and Parliament, leading to the Imperial Palace, where the Rainbow Celebration then gets under way at the Heldenplatz.

Musical Instruments of the Middle East…

Here is a beautiful Registered cover sent by my friend Dr Eli Moallem from Israel featuring Musical Instruments of the middle East. The stamps are so beautiful with special tabs featuring rugs from Middle East & Central Asia. Thanks Eli for the cover with stamps on Music. I found one more stamp on reverse side of the cover that is very special for me as it features a Rainbow on the stamp. I have shown that stamp below. It is a wonderful addition to my Rainbow collection. I am so pleased Eli ! Thanks a lot for this wonderful stamp.

Musical Instruments of the Middle East

Date of Issue – 14 June 2010

The main theme in each of the five stamps is an ancient Eastern instrument accompanied by a modern Western instrument whose roots may be traced back to that Eastern instrument.

The stamps feature: Darbuka and Drum ; Zurna and Oboe ; Qanun and Piano ; Oud and Guitar ; Rabbaba and Violin

The stamp tabs and lower sections feature Oriental rugs from the Middle East and Central Asia.
