Cocoa Scented stamps from Liberia..

cocoa

The African nation of Liberia will issue two sheets of chocolate themed postage stamps commemorating one of their leading exports, cocoa. Postage stamps on the first sheet are designed to appear as blocks of chocolate in an unwrapped candy bar, while the second sheet portrays a box of truffles–each stamp depicting a different gourmet confection. Both sheets are cocoa scented.

cocoa

These attractive designs strive to educate philatelists in the process of making this beloved dessert, from harvesting the beans to packaging chocolate products. The incorporation of a quick response (QR) barcode supplies additional information on this process and gives the stamps a modern touch.

The QR code can be scanned by most smart phones and read with a built-in decoding program which will reveal a document entitled, “From Bean to Bar: The Making of Chocolate.” Each sheet features 9 stamps, and will be on sale at post offices throughout Liberia and through stamp dealers worldwide.

Therefore, Pos Malaysia will be recalling all the Nilai-Nilai Murni (Values) stamps and will reissue the stamps to include the Tamil word for Kesyukuran.

He said that Pos Malaysia should have accorded proper recognition to the role of Tamil. He urged MIC to highlight the matter.

Date of Issue : 17 May 2011

Bush fresh ... the eucalyptus-infused stamp

Australia Post will issue a new aromatic postage stamp on 17th May  2011 with specific aromatic smell of Eucalyptus oil. The stamp has been printed by using special technique. "The eucalyptus scent is encapsulated into little bubbles and we put that into a printable varnish," Graeme Lidgerwood, the sales manager of the print firm Ego, said. "It could last forever. The scent will only wear off when you rub the surface to break the micro bubbles." The Farming Australia issue, on sale from May 17, features four 60c stamps depicting native horticultural products: bush honey, macadamia nuts, tea-tree oil and eucalyptus oil. However only one will feature the scent of a eucalypt forest embedded in what Ego calls the Scent print varnish, a technique which has been used to liven up magazine covers. The scented stamp will be  available only in a special sheet that retails for slightly above face value, at $6.45 for 10 stamps. Individual stamps (bought over the counter, or on self-adhesive rolls and booklets) , will not carry the eucalypt scent.

Club News

I have received a forwarded mail about some Unique & Special Postage Stamps issued round the world which I just wish to share here… Though I have already published some of these stamps on this blog sometimes back….But some might have been missed. Here is a quick round-up of unique stamps issued in the past few years.

Unique Postage Stamps

These are some really unique postage stamps, from a stamp that looks & smells like chocolates to a cloth stamp to even a CD-ROM stamp!

Unique & Special Postage Stamps

This stamp was printed on silver foil by the government of Tonga:

These stamps issued in Malaysia feature a variety of nocturnal animals and actually glow in the dark:

In 2004, Switzerland issued this wooden stamp made from 120-year-old fir trees:

Switzerland also produced this embroidered stamp in 2000, celebrating the world-famous embroidery created in St. Gallen, one of the Swiss cantons:

This Austrian stamp from 2005 is similarly made of threads, embroidered into the design of the Edelweiss, the well-known alpine flower. The stamp was issued in honour of the Austrian embroidery industry, which dates back to the eighteenth century. The stamp has a self-adhesive backing, but can even be worn if so desired

Austria Post also produced in the world’s first stamp made of soccer ball material in 2008, to mark the UEFA Euro soccer tournament:

(on the right: famous Lufthansa's soccer ball airplane paint scheme)
In 2006, Austria issued this curious stamp, which could even be said to be out of this world. The stamp contains 0.03 grams of dust from a meteorite found in Morocco two years earlier, which was fixed to the stamp with a special adhesive:

These cloth stamps from Grenada, the Gambia, Sierra Leone and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, honour the humble teddy bear:

The Rock of Gibraltar is one of the world’s most recognized natural features and it appeared on this Gibraltar stamp in more ways than one in 2002. The stamp’s top layer is actually embellished with finely pulverized pieces of rock from the famous landmark:

This 2007 stamp printed on thinly sliced cork is from Portugal, commemorating the country’s cork industry, which produces around 30% of the world supply:

A Singapore souvenir set of $5 stamps from 2008 was covered in beads on a sheet shaped like a handbag:

Several countries around the world have produced scented stamps offering a variety of different aromas. The small Himalayan nation of Bhutan was probably the first nation to issue this type of stamp in 1973. These stamps were perfumed to smell like roses:

In celebration of the Year of the Pig in 2007, China really did issue a stamp bearing the aroma of sweet and sour pork (above, right). It is rumoured that the stamp’s adhesive actually tasted a little like the famous Chinese delicacy, but this is far from established fact.

Issued to raise awareness of the dangers of forest fires, these Brazilian stamps smell of burnt wood:

Also from Brazil, where most of the planet’s supply of coffee beans originates, this stamp is scented with thearoma of coffee, one of the country’s largest exports:

Another country renowned for a product derived from beans is Switzerland, world famous for its chocolate. This stamp was sold in a foil-wrapped booklet, similar to most chocolate bars. However, the stamp merely smells like chocolate and apparently when licked tastes exactly like glue:

In honor of the centenary of the Nobel Prizes in 2001, the United Kingdom issued this stamp with the scent of eucalyptus. When the stamp is scratched, eucalyptus aroma, hidden in tiny capsules in the stamp’s top layer, is released:

The stamp shown above right is giving off sandalwood scent;

Several countries have placed moving images on their stamps. This one from Austria includes forty eight images, which allow a three second “movie” to appear when the stamp is viewed from certain angles.

The small Himalayan nation of Bhutan is famous for its stamps, including the first ever stamp made of steel:

These embossed stamps, depicting famous world leaders, are printed on plastic:

These stamps issued in 1973 by Bhutan are also real phonograph records. They contain traditional folk songs and an oral history of the kingdom, in both English and Bhutanese, and really can be played on a record player:

More recently, Bhutan introduced postage stamps that doubled as actual

CD-ROMs. One is entitled “Bhutan: In Harmony with Nature”, the other “Bhutan: 100 Years of Monarchy”.

Now, a stamp of approval for your photograph

In what could be an ultimate treat for philately enthusiasts, they can now have their personalised stamps. For the first time in India, stamp lovers got the opportunity to have their own or that of their loved ones' photographs on a real India postal stamp sheet for Rs 150. Personalised stamp - 'My Stamp' - is one of the most exciting and unique philatelic concepts that has given huge momentum to the World Philatelic Exhibition 2011 exhibition that was inaugurated by the president of India Pratibha Patil on Saturday at Pragati Maidan here. This is the 6th time India is hosting the exhibition. This time, the exhibition is taking place after a gap of 13 years. The exhibition has been attended by over 500 foreign delegates from across 70 countries.

Personalised stamp is unique in India, but this is quite popular in Netherlands. In Netherlands, people interested in getting stamps issued in their names have to send a requisition form and if they manage to fulfill all criteria, a personalised stamp can be easily made available by the government.

The whole idea is to popularise the use of postal stamps and thus encourage habit of letter writing and sending greeting cards in India. "A personalised stamp is a postage stamp, where a photograph can be added to the stamp. One can use the stamp while sending out letters or greetings on special occasions," said Harpreet Singh, director, Indipex 2011. One can make a choice from stamps on zodiac signs, aircrafts, train engines, wildlife, Taj Mahal and Panchatantra for his own personalised stamp.

A 'My Stamp' counter is opened at the venue. One either has to go there with a photograph with or get it clicked there. After sometime, he will be handed over a leaf of 12 stamps with his mug shot printed on them.

But many people had unpleasant experience in the exhibition ground, thanks to mismanagement on the organiser's part. Very few people were at the venue to guide the visitors, which is why many found it difficult to even locate the counter of their choice. People even had to wait for two hours in 'My Stamp' counter to get their photographs clicked. "Stamps were not properly catalogued nor were they placed in sequence. There were very few volunteers at stalls to assist the visitors," said Tanya Roy, a resident of Lajpat Nagar.

"The situation went out of control on Saturday as hundreds of people poured in. From Sunday onwards, we are planning to keep photographs and postal addresses of the ones coming for my stamp and later send them to their respective addresses," said Subhash Barmma, general manager, Indipex, 2011.

First khadi stamp makes mark

Feb. 12: The freedom movement and the country’s khadi heritage that came to symbolise it have been brought together in a unique stamp by India Post. The limited edition stamp made of the handspun material, which has generated huge interest among philatelists and collectors, was conceived to kindle the interest of the younger generation in stamps.

“The Internet generation is clueless about postal stamps and letters. We decided to come up with a unique product to get them interested in stamps,” Kavery Banerjee, chairperson of Indipex 2011, the annual international philatelic exhibition being held in New Delhi, told this newspaper.

After toying with the idea of silk stamps, India Post decided to go with homespun khadi. “And because it was khadi, it had to be with an image of the Mahatma,” said Ms Banerjee. Though India Post came up with the idea six months ago, India Security Press at Nashik was able to find a viable way to produce the stamp only after a lot of research in January 2011. “We are very happy that they got the stamp ready in time for the event,” Ms Banerjee said. Indipex was inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil in New Delhi on Saturday.

The khadi stamp is diamond-shaped and made of the usual unwatermarked, adhesive gravure-coated stamp paper on which is stuck a square of khadi cloth specially manufactured in West Bengal. A charkha appears on the foreground of the cloth, with the thread spinning out to form a line drawing of Mahatma Gandhi spinning.

“The stamp has a postage value of Rs 100 but is being offered as a limited edition in a collector’s pack at the exhibition for Rs 250,” Ms Banerjee said. The department has also launched a ‘My Stamp’ scheme through which an individual can get a personalised stamp for Rs 150.

INDIPEX 2011 – News and Pics..

P-117

President of India Mrs. Pratibha Patil launching a Khadi stamp on Mahatma Gandhi at the World Philatelic Exhibition, in New Delhi on February 12, 2011. Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Kapil Sibal, and Ministers of State Sachin Pilot and Gurudas Kamat are also seen.

President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil inaugurated the World Philatelic Exhibition, INDIPEX 2011, here today by releasing a special limited edition Khadi stamp on Mahatma Gandhi.

"Stamps are usually printed on paper. For the first time in history, a special Khadi stamp is being issued which is on Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of non-violence," she said.

Ms Patil noted that there had been a decline in letters by post. "While technological advancements may have provided many faster modes of communication, the intimacy of the letter and the legend of the stamp cannot be matched," she said.

Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Kapil Sibal said that India Post is also celebrating the centenary of the world’s first official airmail flight.

On 18th February 1911, a French pilot, Henri Pequet flew a small Sommer biplane carrying 6,500 letters from Allahabad to Naini. The journey was brief and lasted just thirteen minutes. To commemorate the occasion a set of stamps on aero philately is being issued at Allahabad today. The historic flight is also being re-enacted, courtesy Indian Air Force, he added.

Referring to "My Stamp", the exciting offer at INDIPEX 2011, he said this customized and personalized stamp is being introduced by India Post for the first time. One can have photographs of oneself on a stamp sheet which can be used to send out greetings or preserved as a unique philatelic memento.

The Minister said that, to commemorate INDIPEX 2011, India Post had brought out two sets of stamps in 2010, one on Heritage Post Offices and one on old pre- Independence era stamps of Indian States. A set of six stamps on six legendary actresses of Indian cinema will also be issued during this exhibition.

Later, Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology Gurudas Kamat presented a gold plated ingot with various stamps embossed on it to the President. The other Minister of State Sachin Pilot presented the first sheet of "My Stamp" to the President.

The aim of the exhibition is to promote philately and provide a forum for interaction between philatelic stakeholders such as collectors, dealers, stamp designers and printers and postal administrations. The exhibition will showcase some of the best collections of stamps, stationery and philatelic literature from all over the world in different categories. There are 595 collectors from 70 countries who will be participating in the exhibition, apart from 28 philatelic dealers and 31 postal administrations.

Among the rare stamps on display is the most expensive Indian stamp, the "Inverted Head Four Annas" issued in 1854.

INDIPEX 2011 has been organized by India Post at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 12 to 18 February after a gap of thirteen years. It is being organized in collaboration with the Philatelic Congress of India under the auspices of the Federation Internationale de Philatelie and the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately. This is the sixth time that such an exhibition is being held in India. India first held such an exhibition in 1954 and the last one was in 1997.

Khadi stamp on Mahatma Gandhi huge crowdpuller at postal expo

New Delhi: A special postage stamp on Mahatma Gandhi created from khadi turned out to be the most sought-after at the World Philatelic Exhibition that began here today.

The stamp, a collector's delight priced at Rs 250 for a premium limited edition in a miniature sheet format, was a coveted item for enthusiasts who queued up to buy it at the India Post counter at Pragati Maidan the venue of Indipex 2011, that was inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil.

"India has never issued any stamp on any material other than on paper. In other countries, materials like silk, gold and diamonds have been used to make stamps. We thought to experiment with khadi and Gandhiji was a natural choice since he advocated the use of handspun khadi," said Harpreet Singh, Director, Indipex.

"We knew the stamp would generate a good response but this is overwhelming," he said when there was a brief stoppage around noon in the sale of stamps at the venue due to lack of stock. However, the sale resumed after fresh stock was brought half an hour later.

Umesh Karkari, a philatelist at the venue said, "This is a very rare stamp and I was the first to obtain a copy. Gandhi theme is the most popular for stamp collectors and I am proud to own this khadi stamp."

The stamp made out of khadi is also being sold online at the Indipex 2011 website where an individual can order upto a maximum of 10 stamps.

There was a long queue even for the online bookings during the first day of the exhibition.

An India Post official said, "We had printed one lakh special khadi stamps especially for Indipex 2011 and we think we might have to order some more units going by the huge demand."

One of the other events at the exhibition which drew crowds, especially children, was the "My Stamp" section. The initiative introduced by India Post for the first time offered visitors a chance to customise and personalise a stamp with their own photographs.

On Sunday, February 13, a set of stamps on six legendary actresses of Indian cinema, namely, Meena Kumari, Nutan, Kanan Devi, Devika Rani, Leela Naidu and Savitri will be released.

A total of 595 collectors from 70 countries are participating in the exhibition organised in collaboration with the Philatelic Congress of India under the auspices of the Federation Internationale de Philatelie and the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately.
