Snack food – Chips on stamp..

Date of Issue : 7 June 2011

Aland Post issued a stamp featuring world’s most favourite snack food – Potato chips on 7 June 2011. Potato chips are popular all over the world and available in different flavours. This might be the first stamp on chips though many stamps have been issued on a variety of food items, eaten around the world but potato chips is the universal snack food and popular among all age groups of people in every corner of the world. Originally potato chips were invented in America in the year 1853 .

Story of chips

According to a traditional story, the original potato chip recipe was created in Saratoga Springs, New York on August 24, 1853. Agitated by a patron repeatedly sending his fried potatoes back because they were too thick, soggy and bland, resort hotel chef, George Crum, decided to slice the potatoes as thin as possible, frying them until crisp and seasoning them with extra salt. Contrary to Crum's expectation, the patron (sometimes identified as Cornelius Vanderbilt) loved the new chips and they soon became a regular item on the lodge's menu under the name "Saratoga Chips".

In the 20th century, potato chips spread beyond chef-cooked restaurant fare and began to be mass produced for home consumption. The Dayton, Ohio-based Mike-sell's Potato Chip Company, founded in 1910, calls itself the "oldest potato chip company in the United States".New England-based Tri-Sum Potato Chips, originally founded in 1908 as the Leominster Potato Chip Company, in Leominster, Massachusetts claim to be America's first potato chip manufacturer.

Today, chips are packaged in plastic bags, with nitrogen gas blown in prior to sealing to lengthen shelf life, and provide protection against crushing.

New Stamps on Music..

On May 25, 2011 the Ministry of Communications and Information of the Republic of Belarus issued 2 stamps “Wheel lyra” and “Tar” from the series “Joint issue of Belarus and Azerbaijan. Musical instruments”.

Letter “H” shown on stamp denotes the surface tariff of a letter up to 20 gram abroad.

Musical Instruments on stamps

The wheel lyra is an ancient stringed folk instrument of Belarus. In olden times it was played by wandering musicians and blind balladeers.

When the musician is in sitting he holds the instrument on his knees, when standing — on a strap over his shoulder. With one hand he pushes the keys playing a melody, with the other hand he turns the protruding wheel which touches the strings creating the permanent accompaniment. The wheel lyra has a strong, sharp, somewhat nasal tone. Its quality is largely depends on the wheel — it must have a precise centering.

music

The tar is a stringed pizzicato musical instrument widespread in Azerbaijan. This is one of the few national musical instruments for which they specially create musical works. While playing the musician holds the tar at the breast by his right hand in a horizontal position. With the same hand he plucks the strings by a plectrum. Technical and artistic capabilities of the tar are implemented through trills and different techniques of the plectrum strike.

Floral Festival…

FF

Date of Issue – 8 March 2011

Australian floral festivals are being celebrated by Australia Post, with the release of a new stamp issue on 8 March 2011.

The five stamps in the issue feature colourful photographic depictions of popular flower species - the gerbera, jacaranda, Australian everlasting, violet and tulip.

FF2

"Australia's floral festivals are engaging events for gardening enthusiasts and local communities, and they have also become major tourist attractions.

The flowers featured in the stamp issue each represent a better known floral festival. The tulip has a long association with the Netherlands, which exports more than seven billion tulip bulbs throughout the world each year, including to Australia. This sculptural flower represents Canberra's Floriade.

Jacarandas line the streets of Grafton, so it is little wonder that the town's annual floral festival, which began in 1935, takes its name from the flower. Around 50 species of jacaranda are found throughout the world, with Jacaranda mimosifolia associated with the Grafton Jacaranda Festival.

The violet is a hardy plant that can be grown just about anywhere in Australia, with some species giving off a delightful scent. This flower was chosen to symbolise the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, which has been running since 1949 and was established to increase economic activity after World War II.

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show selected the gerbera as its signature flower, the brightly coloured species always a favourite with florists.

ff3

The stamp issue products for Floral Festivals Australia are a first day cover, stamp pack, set of five Maxim cards, prestige booklet, aerogramme, self-adhesive booklet of 20 x 60c stamps, self-adhesive roll of stamps and international postage-paid envelopes.
