China 2011 - 27th Asian International Philatelic Exhibition

The 27th Asian International Stamp Exhibition China 2011 , co-sponsored by State Post Bureau, Jiangsu Government, China Post and All-China Philatelic Federation, will be held in Wuxi Taihu International Exposition Center from November 11 to November 15, 2011. This exhibition will be a large international stamp culture exchange activity. held in China after the 2009 World Stamp Exhibition.

Exhibition Date: November 11 – 15, 2011, will run for five days. 
Exhibition scale: competition and non-competitive exhibition:  1300, plans 1100 exhibits outside , China (mainland) exhibits 200 . Exhibition area of 4,000 square meters. 100 Sales Booth: 100  outside the Post and 40 stamp dealers, stamp collecting domestic companies and 60 private dealers.

Exhibition aims: to promote the development of our culture; promote the cause of China's postal and philatelic career development; promote the holding of the economic, cultural, all-round coordinated development; to promote philately in Asia and Oceania-round development; to promote international cultural exchange of people.

Venue :  Taihu International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Philatelic Tributes to Firaq Gorakhpuri

Today is Death anniversary of famous Urdu poet Firaq Gorakhpuri. Firaq Gorakhpuri's real name was Raghupati Sahay. He was born in 1896 in Gorakhpur, India. He left his imprint on three important genres of Urdu poetry - ghazal, nazm and rubaayee. He wrote more than 40,000 couplets. He was a poet of love and beauty. His poems are published in three anthologies - Rooh-o-Qaayanat, Gul-e-Ra'naa, Nagma-numaa. He passed away on 3rd March 1982 after a long illness.

Stamp boy, 62, wants to be philately ambassador

Fifty-four years ago, a photograph of an eight-year-old boy eating a banana was chosen by Jawaharlal Nehru to be put on a postage stamp. Shekhar Borker, the boy in the stamp, now a 62-year-old, wants to dedicate his life to promote Indian philately. Borker, who retired from Indian Aluminium Company in 2009, was invited by the India Post to address hundreds of school children at the World Philatelic Exhibition 2011 on Monday.

“I will be happy to be India Post’s ambassador to promote philately amongst children,” he said.

“He proposed to get associated with us as an ambassador for philately promotion among the children. We welcome him as an ambassador to promote philately,” said Subhash Barmma, general manager, World Philatelic Exhibition 2011.

“Philately is a cost-effective but extremely useful hobby through which one can easily learn about history, geography, scientific invention, art and culture,” he said.

A philatelist himself, Borker’s pride and joy is an album of stamps featuring him that have been signed by Nehru and Indira Gandhi. “This album is my prized possession,” he said.

The stamp with Borker on it, priced at 8 naya paisa, was released along with two others on November 14, 1957, to commemorate Children’s Day.

Borker is the only other living person, after Mother Teresa and a Kanpur girl (now in her 70s) Rita Malhotra, who has been featured in India’s postage stamps. The stamp with Borker on it has been featured Court of Honour from three stamps issued together in 1957. India Security Press, Nasik, displayed the stamp at the ‘Court of Honour’ zone at the exhibition.

City philatelist’s collection on airmails displayed in Delhi

PATNA: Eminent philatelist from the state capital, Pradip Jain, has made the country proud. For the last 30 years he has done extensive study in the field of Indian airmails. Currently, his prized collection of stamps and first covers has been put on display in New Delhi as a part of the civil aviation centenary year.
On February 18, 1911, the first commercial plane flew in India between Allahabad and Naini. This was also the world's first official airmail.
In the World Philatelic Exhibition-INDIPEX 2011, being held between February 12-18 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, Jain's collection has been invited for 'court of honour'. President Pratibha Singh Patil saw it on Saturday.
His collection 'Indian Airmails' Development and Operations (1911-1942)' has received acclaim and numerous awards the world over. He has authored a book by the same title, detailing his research, which was released by former president APJ Abdul Kalam in 2003.
To commemorate the centenary of airmail, he has donated from his collection a rare 1911 cover of world's first airmail flight to Smithsonian Museum, USA.
It was around 5 pm on February 18, 1911, when French pilot Henri Pequet loaded a sack of 6,500 cards and letters on a two-seater plane stationed at a polo field in Allahabad and soared into the evening sky. The flight to Naini lasted only 13 minutes and it covered a mere five miles. But history had been made. This was the world's first official airmail. Among the letters was one written by Motilal Nehru to his son Jawaharlal; some were addressed to England's King George V.
"President Patil showed keen interest in reading Motilal's letter to Jawaharlal which is on display in the exhibition," Jain told TOI over phone from New Delhi.
"The world's first airmail delivery flight would be re-enacted on February 18 by the Indian Post," Jain said. It will also issue a set of special stamps on this occasion.
Jain (58), a resident of Mithapur area of Patna, said French government will put up his collection on display from February 28, and then it would go to the US.

Valentine’s Day…

Today is Valentine’s Day, celebrated all over the world as Lovers’ day. Taiwan is issuing today a set of two stamps for this special occasion. Young people in Taiwan  widely celebrate western Valentine’s Day .

The design of the stamp features a heart formed by a row of perforations, as well as images of roses, presents, hearts, and the word “LOVE” created from pixels. Through the interaction between the sender and the receiver, these stamps convey love and heighten the romantic atmosphere of Valentine’s Day. The message of the code is “Happy Valentine’s Day” for the NT$5 stamp and “I Love You” for the NT$25 stamp.

Love may be a universal theme, but the first U.S. stamp to commemorate this basic human emotion didn’t appear until January 1973. The design was based on the iconic LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana (born 1928), today one of the most well-known works in the pop art movement. The artist had played with the design for a number of years and in a variety of formats. He first used the concept in 1958 for a series of poems that employed the iconography of a stacked LO and VE. When Indiana was commissioned to design a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in New York he made three paintings of the word LOVE in red, blue and green. First printed in 1965, it remains the most popular card ever published by the Museum.

The first LOVE sculpture was carved from a single block of unpolished aluminum in 1966. Over the years numerous editions of the sculpture have been created, including versions in red and blue, blue and green, and red, white and blue. International language editions can be found in Italian and Hebrew. The image has appeared on t-shirts, mugs, posters, paperweights, and many other collectibles.

Although the first LOVE stamp was enormously popular, it would be eight years before the LOVE theme was repeated. Finally, following numerous requests, in 1982 the USPS released a floral tribute with the word “LOVE” spelled out in a variety of flowers.Two years later, a third LOVE stamp was issued, this one showing five repetitions of the word “LOVE” with a different colored heart replacing the “V” in each. Like the 1982 release, the 1984 LOVE stamp was considered a special rather than a commemorative; that is, it was available in larger quantities and for a longer period of time than a commemorative. According to USPS press releases, the new LOVE stamp was intended for use “not just for Valentine’s Day but for special occasions throughout the year, such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and letters to loved ones.” A generic LOVE stamp appeared in 1985 and 1986. Picking up a color scheme begun with the 1984 issue — and would continue pretty consistently for the next ten years — the 1985 stamp one that featured bold slashes of primary and secondary colors above a purple “LOVE,” red “USA,” and green “22.” The 1986 stamp featured a whimsical cartoon puppy with a hopeful expression.

The 1984 through 1986 issues coincided with the phasing out and retirement of “Mr. ZIP,” the ambassador of the Postal Service’s ZIP Code system since 1964. The American public found the “friendly little salesman in blue” enormously appealing, with his theme song of “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah” (sung by Ethel Merman). He appeared on several stamps himself, as well as on post office collectibles and the selvedge of various stamps, including the 1984, 1985, and 1986 LOVE stamps. Mr. ZIP was officially retired in 1986.

Glimpses of Indipex 2011..

 

 

Hi ! The biggest philatelic show INDIPEX 2011 has started with introduction of unique Khadi stamp and personalized stamp  by India Post.  The whole philatelic community seems to be very excited and enthusiastic. Many of them are already attending the grand exhibition at New Delhi but those who could not visit and planning to visit later like me, here are the glimpses of the exhibition. Mr Ashwani Dubey  is sending regular updates from the venue. He reports that there is a big rush for getting personalized stamp and Khadi stamp. A long queue could be seen before the counter of Personalized stamp. But he manages to get his own personalized stamp and here he shares with all of you…So have a nice time, those who are attending the show ……And have a glimpse of the exhibition who are not able to attend this grand show and  just  feel as you are at the exhibition !!!!
