Stamp on Vergi Lighthouse….

Date of Issue : 2 June 2011

Estonia Post will issue postage stamp on 2 June 2011 to commemorate famous Vergi lighthouse. Vergi Lighthouse, which will be 75 in 2011, is a white concrete tower with lantern room and balcony, 10 meters high from the foot. The height of the light from sea level is 11 meters and the visibility of the light is nine miles.

Vergi

In the late 19th and early 20th century Vergi was one of the biggest fishing villages on the North Estonian coast, particularly known as the best eel fishing place. In the 1920s it served as a wintering place for small ships and it also had a shipbuilding industry. In 1924 an automatic light pyramidal lattice frame light beacon covered with iron plating was put up on a large coastal reef next to Vergi Port. Analogous beacons were erected on several other Estonian islands, such as Prangli and Muhu. In 1936 a reinforced concrete lighthouse ten meters high replaced the rust-eaten structure. During World War II there was no light in the Vergi lighthouse, but it started blinking again in 1945.

Permanent Pictorial Postmark – 17 - Mahabalipuram

Date of Inauguration of PPP - December 31, 1976

Mahabalipuram (derived from Tamil - Mamallapuram) was a 7th century port city of the South Indian dynasty of the Pallavas around 60 km south from the city of Chennai. The name Mamallapuram is believed to have been given after the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, who took on the epithet Maha-malla (great wrestler), as the favorite sport of the Pallavas was wrestling. It has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th centuries, and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The postmark shows Shore Temple, a structural temple along the Bay of Bengal with the entrance from the western side away from the sea. Recent excavations have revealed new structures here. The temple was reconstructed stone by stone from the sea after being washed away in a cyclone. The modern city of Mahabalipuram was established by the British in 1827.

image

To be issued on 21 April 2011

The Royal Mail will issue two official stamps on 21 April to commemorate the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. The stamps will feature photographs taken by Mario Testino to mark the couple's engagement .

It is the third time Prince William has appeared on a Royal Mail stamp - he was featured on a sheet of stamps to celebrate the Queen and the Queen Mother's 100th birthday in 2000 and in 2003 became the first member of the royal family to have a set of stamps produced to celebrate their 21st birthday.

He is also the first of the Queen's grandchildren to have their wedding commemorated on a set of stamps.

Envelope with interesting Printing Error

DINESH SHIVNATH UPADHYAYA

I have a unique envelop of denomination 100 ps. (Rs.1) which I found from bunch of old household letters. The most important & unique thing of it is that, whatever is printed on outer side of envelop like national emblem, Satyamev Jayate, Bharat, INDIA, PIN, 100 is exactly reverse (mirror image) printed on the inner side of envelop, when it is totally open. I consider it as a major printing error.

I wanted to know more information about envelop from Postal Dept. So I used Right of information act, 2005. After a long correspondence with Indian postal dept. (Mumbai & New Delhi ) & Indian security press ( Nasik), I got following satisfactory & authentic information about my envelop.

 This envelop was printed in June 1990.

 Reverse printing on envelop is due to a kind of printing error called set off printing.

 From philately officials, I came to know that it was the first time they encounter with such type of reverse printing error & it is one of the first kinds of case in India.

 Indian security press (Nasik Road) from where this envelop is printed, the official accepted that this envelop with set -off printing error is inadvertently pass through examination section due to oversight.

Limca Book of Records (India) in their 2009 & 2010 edition featured my unique postal envelop as “Totally Mis - Printed Postal Envelop”
Please see my article “Totally Mis - Printed Postal Envelop, RTI ”

Tanna Coffee – The Taste of Vanuatu…

image

Date of Issue – 23 March - 2011

image

The Tanna Coffee Development Company was established in Tanna in 1982, to assist Vanuatu soon after its independence.   The process of famous Tanna Coffee  begins with the hand picked cherries being processed at 35 pulperies on Tanna. The cherries are pulped, naturally fermented, washed, screened and sun-dried prior to transportation to the Dry Processing Factory. Here the dry skins are removed, 'green beans' graded according to size and then bagged ready for shipping to Port Vila. The coffee beans are then carefully roasted as part of the 25 steps in the process from the 'plantation to the cup'. Modern international standard packaging completes the process. Currently, all coffee is sold in roasted and packaged form through Tanna Coffee’s facility in Port Vila with 70% being distributed locally and the balance being exported overseas. The Roasting Factory has now been developed to cater for tourist visits.

Underwater Post Office of Vanuatu Post

image

Vanuatu Post’s Underwater Post Office, found just off Hideaway Island near Port Vila, has quickly become one of the busiest post offices for postcards in the world!
Visitors from around the world have literally donned their mask and snorkels, postcards in hand to experience the world’s first underwater post office.

image

And they have not been disappointed. The Post Office is only 50 metres offshore and at just three metres below the surface, is very accessible to the young and young at heart. Thousands of visitors have posted one of the special waterproof postcards available in Vanuatu; these cards are collected regularly by one of Vanuatu Post’s four trained scuba divers and “cancelled” underwater with an embossing cachet. Mail that requires a normal Underwater Post Office date stamp is cancelled in the Main Post Office.

image image

Since opening in 2003, the underwater post office has received an estimated 100,000 visitors. The underwater branch is manned daily for usually about an hour, longer on cruise ship days or with demand.

“I love working at the underwater branch,” says VPL’s Samuel Robert. “It’s great fun and really pleasing to see so many visitors each day who cannot believe their eyes!”
Vanuatu Post has released two stamp issues commemorating the world’s first underwater post office.
